How to Use Type Answer Quiz in EngageSlide – Open Response Quiz
Expert Guide: Using Type Answer Quizzes
What is a Type Answer Quiz?
The Type Answer quiz is for serious knowledge testing. Instead of selecting from a list, participants must type the correct answer manually. This eliminates guessing and ensures they actually know the material.
Why use it?
- Rigorous Testing: No lucky guesses—participants must recall the answer themselves.
- Flexible Correctness: You can define multiple acceptable variations of the correct answer.
- High Stakes: Often used in the final rounds of competitions to separate the experts from the beginners.
Quick Setup Guide
1
Click "+ New Slide" and choose "Type Answer" from the Quiz section.
2
Enter your question. In the Content area, list all possible correct variations (e.g., if the answer is "20", you might also accept "twenty").
3
Configure points and response time in the Right Column Settings.
Advanced Settings (Right Column)
⚡ Fast Answer Bonus
Turn on "More points for fast correct answers" to reward the quickest thinkers. In Type Answer quizzes, speed is a major differentiator.
⏱️ Seconds to Answer
Give participants enough time to type! 20-30 seconds is usually ideal for short answers, while longer phrases may require more.
🎯 Points Settings
Set the Min and Max points possible. Higher Max points can be used to signal "Boss Level" questions.
Pro Tips for Hardcore Quizzing
- Account for Typos: Think of common misspellings and add them as correct variations to ensure fairness.
- Case Sensitivity: Note that the system is generally not case-sensitive, so "Paris" and "paris" will both be marked correct.
- Use as a Gatekeeper: Use Type Answer questions before a leaderboard to see who really owns the topic.
- Clear Prompts: Be very specific in your question (e.g., "Answer in one word" or "Name the year") to avoid ambiguous variations.
Recall is the highest form of mastery.
